Healthy Eating Tips
What comes to mind when you think about healthy foods?
Perhaps you think of bland, tasteless salads, or maybe you imagine expensive superfoods that are out of reach for most people. However, healthy eating doesn't have to be boring or expensive. In fact, there are many delicious and affordable foods that can help you stay healthy and feel energised.
The Importance of Healthy Eating

Eating a balanced diet is essential for maintaining good health and preventing chronic diseases. A diet that is high in processed foods, sugar, and saturated fats can lead to weight gain, heart disease, diabetes, and other health problems. On the other hand, a diet that is rich in whole, unprocessed foods can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases, improve mental health, and provide the body with essential nutrients.
Nutrients and Healthy Foods
Nutrients are the building blocks of a healthy diet. They include protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Eating a balanced diet that includes a variety of nutrient-rich foods can help promote optimal health and well-being.
Protein
Protein is essential for building and repairing tissues in the body. Good sources of protein include lean meats, fish, poultry, beans, and nuts.
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are the body's primary source of energy. Healthy sources of carbohydrates include whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.
Fats
Healthy fats are important for maintaining healthy skin and hair, regulating body temperature, and protecting organs. Good sources of healthy fats include olive oil, avocado, nuts, and fatty fish.
Vitamins and Minerals
Vitamins and minerals are essential for maintaining optimal health and preventing chronic diseases. Good sources of vitamins and minerals include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.

Superfoods
Superfoods are foods that are particularly rich in nutrients and offer numerous health benefits. Some examples of superfoods include blueberries, spinach, salmon, almonds, and sweet potatoes.
Foods to Avoid
Certain foods should be avoided or limited in a healthy diet. These include processed foods, sugary drinks, and foods high in saturated fats.

The Definition of Healthy Foods
Healthy foods are those that provide the body with essential nutrients while also helping to maintain a healthy weight. These foods are usually low in calories and high in vitamins, minerals, and fibre. Healthy foods can come from a variety of sources, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Only a few nutrients can be stored in the body, and then only for a short time. Eating a variety of foods each day ensures the body gets all of the nutrients it needs.

Food fuels the body, so more physical activity requires more fuel. Likewise, it takes a lot of physical effort to burn unneeded or extra calories.
The Food Pyramid
Foods that contain the same type of nutrients are grouped together on each of the shelves of the Food Pyramid. This gives you a choice of different foods from which to choose a healthy diet.
Following the Food Pyramid as a guide will help you get the right balance of nutritious foods within your calorie range.
Studies show that we take in too many calories from foods and drinks high in fat, sugar and salt, on the top shelf of the Food Pyramid. They provide very little of the essential vitamins and minerals your body needs. Limiting these is essential for healthy eating.

It is important for individuals of all ages to maintain a nutritious diet. Make sure to consume all five food groups including dairy, meat/poultry, vegetables, fruit, and grain on a daily basis.
Food Labels

Nutrition information labels can help you choose between products and keep a check on the amount of foods you're eating that are high in fat, salt and added sugars.

Most pre-packed foods have a nutrition information label on the back or side of the packaging.
Portion Control

Controlling your portions doesn’t mean you need to eat tiny amounts or measure out precisely the number of peas on your plate. But if we’re eating too much, then we may need to see a smaller portion as satisfying enough.

Most people eat too much food and wonder why they are not losing weight, or have put weight on.

A standard-sized portion will look small on a larger plate, making you feel dissatisfied. Use a smaller plate to prevent overloading.
Avoid the temptation to polish off or to nibble leftovers when there’s not quite enough for a whole portion.
If you find it happens regularly, then get into the habit of cooking less or have a plan to use up leftovers in another meal.
The difference between these two people is what they eat and drink.
